Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Rabga

Brief biography

Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Rabga is the former Abbott of Sera Mey Monastic University (Byllakupe, Mysore,South India). He took on the responsibilities of Acting Abbot when Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Jamyang was not present at Sera Mey and became the official Abbot of Sera Mey Monastic University when Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Jamyang retired as Abbot of the Monastery. Since then Khensur Rinpoche Rabga has retired as well and has since then been confered the title of Khensur (Abbot Emeritus).

 

Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Rabga, now 76 years old, was born in Lithang, Tibet.  For 5 years, as Sera Mey Thoesam Norling Dratsang’s Director, he was in charge of both internal and external affairs of Sera Mey Monastic University. After an intensive examination, he was awarded with the Geshe Lharampa Degree (highest Ph.D. degree in Buddhist Philosophy).  Then, he was in charge of the construction of the prayer hall of the oldSeraMeyMonasticUniversity, which took 2 years to complete.  Later, for 3 years, he served as treasurer of Sera Mey Monastic University and the following year as Discipline Master.  In 1998, as vice-abbot, he took charge of the construction of the new prayer hall of Sera Mey Monastic University, which was inaugurated in 2002.

In 2007, he was appointed by His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama to be the Abbot of Sera Mey Monastic University, a position he held until 2011.

Khensur Rinpoche Rabga has devoted his whole life to the preservation of Tibetan Buddhism. With the Sangha of Sera Mey, he has dedicated the past 40 years to rebuild the monastic institution and restore the traditional monastic way of life so that Sera Mey could continue to play the prominent role of educating the upcoming generations, therefore assuring the continuous transmission of Buddha Dharma to this day. He has tirelessly given all his heart and mind to the education and the training of countless young monks who are now serving in the temples, religious and educational institutions inIndiaand around the world. Although he has occupied positions of prime importance, Rinpoche Rabga is the true picture of a simple monk. He is well-known for his tremendous kindness and compassion for sentient beings and radiates an aura of loving kindness with his smiling eyes and his soft-spoken voice. He is most loved and respected by all the young generations of monks he has taught to.
